Meet the Young Entrepreneurs of Big Brothers Big Sisters Children’s Business Fair

Big Brothers Big Sisters hosted a business fair for young entrepreneurs in May. Matches of all ages were invited to run a booth at the morning-long fair and sell a product or service to event attendees—plus keep the profits.

“It was a perfect opportunity for our Bigs and Littles to bring their business ideas to life,” says Jessica Reyes, senior program administrator at Big Brothers Big Sisters who orchestrated the first-of-its-kind event for the organization.

At the end of the fair, awards were presented to matches to celebrate their creativity and business savvy.

Ayden + Dustin’s Card Spinners

Inspired by the latest toy craze, Little Brother Ayden knew exactly what he wanted to sell at the Children’s Business Fair.

“I learned that a lot people like fidget spinners so I thought of making them [with] paper, super glue, pennies and clasps,” Ayden says.

With help from his Big Brother Dustin, they made the spinners, created a poster and sold the toys all morning. “Ayden was the accountant for the day, keeping track of our money,” Dustin says. Their hard work paid off and the duo won first place!

Brenda’s Baked Beauties

Combining her passion for baking with the organization, Little Sister Brenda and Big Sister Pauline earned the Best Overall award.

“Brenda baked cookies with the Big Brothers Big Sisters logo; created and handed out business cards; and above all was passionate about her business,” Reyes says. “She won Disneyland tickets and reacted with tears of joy upon receiving the news of her prize.”

Santi’s Sweets

Over at the Santi’s Sweets booth, Little Brother Santiago and Big Brother Armando paired conchas (Mexican sweet bread), brownies and cookies with ice cream for a creative and refreshing dessert.

“We pretty much made everything you probably shouldn’t be eating but it’s delicious so you want to eat it,” Armando says. “It’s a great outing, great showing … a lot of love for Big Brothers Big Sisters.”
