Every year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County recognizes two outstanding matches that illustrate how the mentoring relationship helps youth achieve their biggest possible futures and makes a long-lasting impact on the mentor. The 2024 Bigs and Littles of the Year finalists all have distinct, inspiring stories that illustrate Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mission.

Joanne Kim & Princesa | Matched since 2021

When Princesa joined our program, her mom hoped that it would help her become more confident and comfortable expressing herself. Princesa quickly bonded with Joanne over their shared love for art, and Joanne poured into Princesa's interests and talents, actively looking for opportunities to help her grow them. To showcase Princesa's budding talent and confidence, the two recently hosted an arts and crafts event for other matches! Joanne has been very consistent and supportive and has done an amazing job creating a safe space for Princesa as they continue to support each other.

Bophary Ngin & Areli | Matched since 2020

Areli and Bophary started their match virtually in 2020 and have developed a special and trusting friendship. When Areli faced a challenging event in her life, Bophary was part of her support system and would help Areli stay optimistic. Areli is in a much better place now and she thanks Bophary for making a positive impact in her life. Areli is now in her last year of high school, and she looks forward to graduating.

Jennifer Arnoldt and Jazelle | Matched since 2018

When Jennifer and Jazelle first met, Jazelle was a precocious 10-year-old with dreams of going to college, but also struggled with self-identity. Jennifer became her Little's safe space and together they delved into Jazelle's journey of self-acceptance. When Jazelle's family's financial challenges threatened her ability to enroll in an early college program, Jennifer rallied with Jazelle’s village of support to gather resources to ensure that financial limitations would not hinder Jazelle's dreams. Jazelle is now thriving in her freshman year of high school, and Jennifer continues to help her build her confidence and life skills.

Beth Fujishige and Jassmin | Matched since 2016

Beth and Jassmin have nurtured a rich and open bond over the past seven years. Their journey towards understanding each other wasn't without its challenges, however, through regular outings, patience, and unwavering dedication, they developed a deep appreciation for one another. Jassmin is thriving in her sophomore year of high school, enthusiastically delving into the realms of physics and psychology, aspiring towards a college education.

Suzy Bucierka & Natasha | Matched since 2020

Amidst the pandemic, 13-year-old Tasha found an unwavering mentor in Suzy. Their connection started virtually, evolving into impactful in-person outings. Tasha, dreaming of a military career, confided in Suzy, whose husband served in the military, fostering meaningful discussions about Tasha's aspirations and the sacrifices involved. The pinnacle of their relationship was marked by Suzy standing alongside Tasha during her quince, a significant cultural milestone. As Tasha navigates her junior year in high school, Suzy's steadfast support ensures that she continues to explore her potential and triumph over challenges.

Antonio Alvarado & Daniel | Matched since 2018

Daniel joined BBBS an introverted 11-year-old with limited social interaction outside of his family and lacked exposure to new experiences. Daniel remained reserved during the early stages of the match, but Tony never wavered in his support. Empathizing with Daniel's journey, he carefully observed his unique qualities and preferences, crafting outings that were both enjoyable and enriching. Through this thoughtful approach, Daniel gradually opened up, revealing his true personality and strengthening their bond. As Daniel embarks on his final year of high school, the foundation of trust and connection in their relationship remains strong.

Grant Chase & Connor | Matched since 2021

Connor’s mom enrolled him in our program he could have a friend and a positive male role model in his life. Connor expresses his emotions differently than others, which often makes communication with his peers difficult. Through his patience, care, and consistency, Grant was the first person to be able to truly connect with Connor on his level. A year into their match, Grant noticed that Connor was starting to smile for the first time and that they were having more meaningful conversations. Connor’s mom is grateful to see his development and grateful that Grant has become the exact kind of mentor and friend that Connor needed.

Chris Pyon & Angel | Matched since 2015

Over the span of eight years, Angel and Chris have been unwavering pillars of support for each other. Angel was born with a physical disability, and throughout his life he has faced waves of confidence and insecurities. Chris is the first to always remind Angel of his strengths and abilities, and Angel has a deep appreciation for the impactful lessons in kindness and self-acceptance that his Big has taught him. The two remain committed to supporting one another, meeting every few weeks for breakfast before class, which Angel says has helped his mental health tremendously during his first year of college and first time living on his own.

John Conant & Jayden | Matched since 2019

11-year-old Jayden's life took a transformative turn when he met his Big Brother John. John's mentorship extends beyond the ordinary, imparting crucial life skills to Jayden, such as changing a tire and riding a bike. Recognizing the importance of presence and commitment, John consistently reached out to Jayden during the pandemic, emphasizing that he was there for him during a time of loneliness and isolation. Now a high school sophomore, Jayden is excelling with John's active involvement in his personal and academic growth.

Luc Matthews & Isaac | Matched since 2021

Isaac’s mom enrolled him in the program with the hopes of finding him a consistent, positive male role model. His Big Brother Luc has risen to the occasion, bonding with Isaac over their mutual love of sports. Through frequent games of basketball, they work on self-discipline, resilience, and commitment. Through BBBS, Luc was able to secure a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Isaac to sit courtside at a Lakers game, fueling Isaac's personal motivation to continue working hard to achieve his dreams. Today, Isaac plays basketball at the YMCA regularly and has shown increased self-discipline and resilience.

Beth Fujishige and Jassmin | Matched since 2016

Big Sister Beth and Little Sister Jassmin have developed a strong bond over the past seven years. Although their connection was immediate, the journey to understanding each other was not without its challenges. Through consistent outings, patience, and dedication, they created a safe space to be their authentic selves and formed a profound appreciation for one another. Jassmin, initially a cautious and spirited 9-year-old, has transformed into a vibrant high school sophomore, passionately exploring the worlds of physics and psychology with aspirations for a college education.

Bophary Ngin & Areli | Matched since 2020

Areli and Bophary started their match virtually in 2020 and have since developed a really special friendship. When Areli faced a challenging event in her life, Bophary was part of her support system offering encouragement and positivity. Areli is in a much better place now, and she credits Bophary for making a positive impact in her life. Areli is now in her last year of high school, and she looks forward to graduating with grades she knows she can achieve.

Jennifer Arnoldt and Jazelle | Matched since 2018

In 2018, Jennifer encountered 10-year-old Jazelle, a girl with dreams but struggling with self-identity and confidence. Recognizing Jazelle’s need to connect with her diverse heritage, Jennifer supported her through cultural exploration, including a dream of getting braids for the first time. Despite financial challenges hindering Jazelle’s academic journey, Jennifer’s determination secured a laptop donation, allowing Jazelle to excel in an early college academy. Beyond academics, Jennifer instilled valuable life skills, from swimming to setting a table to self-defense classes. In looking back at their time together, Jennifer expresses immense pride in Jazelle’s growth and foresees a bright future ahead.

When Princesa joined our program, her mother had hoped that it would boost her confidence and help her express herself better. Fortunately, Princesa found a kindred spirit in Joanne, who actively fostered her growth and helped her find opportunities to showcase her love for art. This Fall, with the help of BBBS staff, the match had the chance to lead a pumpkin decorating event. After months of preparation, Princesa confidently presented her work, leaving the audience engaged and laughing. Not only did she support others with their pumpkins, but she also showcased her artistic talents by handcrafting earrings. Thanks to Joanne’s consistent support, Princesa has found a safe and encouraging space to grow, and their mutual encouragement has strengthened their remarkable bond.

Suzy Bucierka & Natasha | Matched since 2020

Chris continues to be a consistent presence in Angel’s life, commemorating milestones like graduation and maintaining regular monthly meetings as part of our Alumni Association.

Connor expresses his emotions differently than others, which often makes communication with his peers difficult. Through his patience, care, and consistency, Grant was the first person to be able to truly connect with Connor on his level. More than a year into their match, Grant noticed that Connor was starting to smile for the first time and that they were having more meaningful conversations. Connor’s mom is grateful to see his development and grateful that Grant became the role model that Connor needed.
