Through partnerships with local businesses, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County hosts free events every month for matches and compiles a list of free or low-cost outing ideas like festivals, shows and more happening throughout Orange County. (Note: Mentors can look for these events and ideas in our monthly newsletter delivered via email on the first Thursday of every month.) Mentors are also encouraged to ask their match support specialist for cost-effective outing ideas specific to your Little.

Big Sister Chris has been matched with her Little Sister Yuritzi since November 2015. When Yuritzi told her Big Sister she would love to go to Knott’s Berry Farm one day, Chris took the opportunity to combine fun and learning by teaching Yuritzi about budgeting. Every month, they start with a budget of $60 to spend on their outings and any leftover amount goes into a “joint savings account” for Knott’s tickets.

Together, they created a budget log to keep track of their spending. The log also helps Yuritzi with math as she adds and subtracts how much they save and spend after every outing. For the first month they saved $10 but as they got closer and closer to their goal, they brainstormed ways to save even more to reach their end goal. For example on one outing, they opted for In-N-Out for lunch and reading books together while they ate instead of going to a restaurant. Their budgeting skills paid off this summer, as they saved up enough money to go to Knott’s together!
