OUR MISSION IS URGENT

“Right now, the number of children growing up in single-parent homes is higher than ever before. Two-thirds of the youth we serve are living below the poverty line. It’s an unfortunate reality for so many children in our community.”

This year brought not only a new look for Big Brothers Big Sisters, but a refocused mission.

Right now, the number of children growing up in single-parent homes is higher than ever before. Two-thirds of the youth we serve are living below the poverty line. It’s an unfortunate reality for so many children in our community, who lack access to postsecondary education, opportunities to develop emotional intelligence and social capital that will help pave the way to achieving a living wage job.

Our mission is urgent. So in 2019, we sharpened our focus. Modernized how we look and talk. All to change futures for every youth in need of a positive role model.

We continue to tackle society’s issues head-on by delivering prevention-based, solution-focused mentoring. We are at the front end of supporting children before they are tagged for gangs. Before they drop out of school. Before they become a statistic in the juvenile justice system. In this world where relationships are stripped out of all we do, we are committed to building and fostering a one-to-one human connection for youth in need.

Our 4,000 mentors, 4,000 children, professional staff, board of directors and donors have chosen to invest in the future of our region through their time, careers and hard-earned dollars. Together, we empower youth. We inspire change. And we ignite potential. All through the power of mentoring. Thank you for investing in the future of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

TYLER & DANIEL

Matched since January 2015
“I know what it is to have failed, to have lost, to have not risen to what you expect of yourself,” says Big Brother Tyler Hungerford. “I also know what it’s like to have people come into your life and help you in that moment of despair. I see that these [kids] are having a tough time and they’re not doing as well as they could be, and they know it. They’re upset about it. And it leads to a lot more bad things; it’s a cycle.”

Our mentors help break that cycle. They see potential in kids like Tyler’s Little Brother Daniel, who was kicked out of several schools because he would act out to try when trying to make friends. With guidance from Tyler, Daniel learned how to get along with others without bullying them and was able to transition out of his charter school. He now takes initiative to befriend kids who look lonely and pushes himself to study advanced subjects in school.

“If we can step in and be a part of changing that cycle, then we can change our society,” Tyler says. “One person could change the life of one kid, and that kid could positively affect millions of people.”

BONNY & HEATHER

Matched since April 2015
Our mentors are role models. They encourage children to step outside their comfort zone and step up to face challenges. They provide vision and access so youth can conquer fears, learn life skills, explore career paths and pursue educational dreams with confidence.

Little Sister Heather was 10 when she moved in with her grandparents. Her mother was incarcerated for shoplifting and both parents struggled with drug addiction. After going two years without seeing or hearing from her parents, the separation had started to take a toll. She would get mad easily and she struggled to get along with anyone.

“When Heather was 12, I went to Big Brothers Big Sisters for help,” says her grandmother, Judy. “I wanted to get a Big Sister for Heather so she could have someone to motivate her in school. She needed someone to help her become more mature, and I was scared that what happened with her parents in the past was going to permanently affect her future.”

Heather was nearly ready to start high school when she met Bonny. She was never an overachiever and didn’t express any interest in pursuing a career path after graduation. But after meeting Bonny and seeing how far education had taken her, Heather began to talk about applying for college.

“Bonny has her MBA and a great job. She’s taken Heather to work and introduced her to her successful friends who Heather loves to hang out with,” Judy says. “Heather saw a different life was possible for her, and she started taking responsibility for her grades. She even went from an F in algebra last year to an A this year!”

Bonny’s success inspired Heather to step up. She got involved in colorguard, signed up for academic programs like AVID and Upward Bound, and asked Bonny to take her on college campus tours. Now 18 and a senior, Heather is exploring a military career with the Marine Corps.

Our mentors guide youth who are at risk of disconnection. They can be the difference between a child dropping out of school and being the first in their family to earn a high school diploma.

Mentors like Bonny inspire youth to set goals, dream bigger and strive for success.
