In order to align with the organization’s strategic vision, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County has developed a company culture in which mentoring and inclusion are cornerstones to success.

Mentoring takes a few different forms within Big Brothers Big Sisters:

  • Externally, the agency’s board of directors comprises successful leaders across various industries with diverse backgrounds. With expertise in human resources, leadership, financial management and business development, all members of the staff have a unique opportunity to seek guidance from board members. This type of mentorship allows the team to find innovative ways to solve organizational issues or find new ways to help families and volunteers in the program.

  • One of the most effective internal programs is the Retention, Engagement and Development (RED) Committee. RED Committee is committed to making each employee feel valued and connected to the organization. This is done through periodic social events, agency anniversary recognition, personalized birthday decorations and more. RED committee has also spearheaded volunteer opportunities within the local community, which allows team members to feel even more connected to those that we serve.

  • Professional development efforts are also focused on mentoring, whether it is peer-to-peer or supervisor-led. There are four levels of leadership in the agency: executive, manager/associate director, senior specialists and program specialists. Leadership cohorts for each level are conducted monthly and facilitated by the CEO and the director of human resources and leadership development. These cohorts have shifted the culture of the organization from small, marginalized teams to a culture in which departments collaborate and share best practices and resources.

It also allows employees to be inspired, to be challenged, to be heard and to be successful.

A culture of mentorship and community service can be very rewarding for any company. Big Brothers Big Sisters offers multiple programs and initiatives that are designed to bridge the gap between the workplace and the community. From workplace mentoring programs (Beyond School Walls) to corporate sponsorship opportunities, give back and get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters as part of your company culture.
