Each year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County and the Inland Empire honors extraordinary mentoring relationships through our Bigs & Littles of the Year award. This award celebrates matches that exemplify commitment, consistency, and the life-changing power of mentorship. These inspiring relationships highlight how mentoring not only helps youth achieve their biggest possible futures but also leaves a lasting impact on mentors.
Our finalists represent the very best of what mentorship can be when people show up for each other year after year. We are proud to recognize the following 10 matches whose stories remind us that when young people feel supported, their potential has no limits. And mark your calendar: the two winning matches will be revealed on January 29 during National Mentoring Month!

Courtney Burback & Randi
Randi didn’t need elaborate outings or big gestures, she just needed someone who stayed. Courtney built trust slowly through shared meals and her quiet presence, even when progress felt invisible. After months of patience, Randi found the courage to accept support, knowing Courtney wouldn’t rush or leave her behind. Now, even on hard days, Randi still chooses time with her Big because she knows she’ll feel lighter after. Their match reminds us that healing often happens one steady week at a time.

Howard Chen & Ethan
Howard met Ethan at a time when college felt like a hope, not a plan. Through STEM outings, life-skills lessons, and introductions to new career paths, Howard helped Ethan see himself as capable of more. Ethan tested out of his IEP, graduated with top grades, and earned a full-ride scholarship to Chapman University where he’s now thriving. Today, their adult relationship looks like family, with the two still meeting up for dinner frequently, with Ethan recently picking up the check for the first time to show Howard his gratitude for his years of support. It’s a reminder that belief paired with action can change a life’s trajectory.

Elsa Pena & Jasmine
Jasmine and Elsa have grown into true sisterhood, bonded through art, adventure, and shared grief. When Jasmine lost her father—and later, Elsa lost her husband—they chose to keep showing up for each other. Their outings became spaces for both laughter and mourning, proof that strength can be mutual and mentorship is a two-way street. With Elsa’s encouragement, Jasmine stayed engaged in school and committed to catching up academically. Together, they have turned loss into resilience.

Ian and Durrah Wagner & Emiliano
Emiliano calls his outings “adventures,” and with Ian and Durrah, every one is intentional. When his ADHD diagnosis made time feel overwhelming, they created a shared calendar so Emiliano always knew when his next adventure was coming. Through library visits, gratitude jars, and Broadway shows, they turned curiosity into confidence. Emiliano now balances school, soccer, and dance with pride—and calls his Bigs his best friends. Their match shows what’s possible when mentorship is creative and collaborative.

Jessica Lam & Yaitza
When Yaitza’s life felt unstable, Jessica became the constant. They study math together, celebrate academic wins, and show up for milestone moments like Yaitza’s quinceañera. Jessica helped turn Yaitza’s drive for school into leadership, from joining sports teams to winning an art contest focused on mental health. Inspired by her Big, Yaitza has even become a High School Big herself. She didn’t just receive mentorship, she learned how to give it. Their match reflects growth that comes full circle.

Colby Clark & Yerek
Colby expanded Yerek’s world one outing at a time from night markets to mini golf to college conversations. When Yerek’s 15th birthday plans fell through, Colby stepped in and made a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Universal Studios happen. That day wasn’t just fun—it showed Yerek he mattered. Now, Yerek speaks confidently about his future and dreams of studying clothing design. Their relationship proves that being seen can change how a young person dreams.

Laura Whitcher & Yahaira
Laura met Yahaira right where her ambition lived, like car rides spent filling out job applications and conversations about what comes next. She treated Yahaira’s goals as urgent and real, long before graduation was in sight. With Laura’s encouragement, Yahaira found her voice, applied for leadership opportunities, and even sang the National Anthem at Angels Stadium! Today, she’s a confident senior preparing for life beyond high school, and she was recently selected as one of our next Voices of Potential. Their match shows what happens when a young person’s dreams are taken seriously.

Ethan Waterson & Marcos
Ethan showed up through graduate school, new parenthood, and family moves—never missing a beat for Marcos. He helped Marcos turn missed assignments into A’s and B’s, setbacks into new sports, and uncertainty into direction. When baseball didn’t work out, Marcos kept his head up high and tried out for wrestling instead (and made the team!) Ethan was there cheering him on through each up and down. Over time, their match blended families and milestones, becoming a lifelong friendship.

Thalia Pizano & Anabelle
When Anabelle joined our program, she wanted what her brother had—a Big who showed up. Thalia did, every two weeks without fail, helping Anabelle learn boundaries, confidence, and what healthy friendship looks like. A full-circle moment came when Thalia introduced Anabelle to her own former Big, showing her that mentorship can last a lifetime. Over four years, their outings grew alongside Anabelle, from Chuck E. Cheese to community volunteering. Thalia’s consistency helped Anabelle grow into a more grounded, self-aware young person.

JP Li & Brendan
When Brendan faced a mental health crisis one week into being matched JP, his Big chose not to walk away. He offered Brendan something rare: normalcy, patience, and the promise, “I’m not going anywhere.” Through simple outings and zero pressure, JP became a steady adult presence during Brendan’s hardest season. Brendan now shows up, tries again, and trusts that this relationship will last. Their match shows how consistency can create safety where it once didn’t exist.
Every year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County recognizes two outstanding matches that illustrate how the mentoring relationship helps youth achieve their biggest possible futures and makes a long-lasting impact on the mentor. The 2024 Bigs and Littles of the Year finalists all have distinct, inspiring stories that illustrate Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mission.
